The original art deco door still leads into the veranda where once the patrons took their drinks. The coloured glass windows date from about the same time and the veranda is now an attractive summer dining room, furnished with table and chairs.
The old half glazed doors give access to the ground floor of the house, which is open plan and divided into three areas. The sitting area at the far end centres round the fireplace with wood-burning stove. The views from the large window are of the vineyards and the canyon in the distance. The dining area is in between the sitting area and the kitchen.

The U-shaped kitchen is equipped with a gas cooker, electric kettle, coffee maker, toaster, large fridge with freezer compartment, as well as all crockery, glass and cookware,
Stairs lead up to the first floor and to the bedrooms and bathroom. Bedroom 1 is furnished with a double bed, bedside tables and night lights, and a half-glazed door leads from this room to the terrace.

Bedroom 2 is furnished with two single beds, bedside table and night lights. An old wardrobe has been imaginatively refurbished. From the window of this bedroom there is a great view of the surrounding countryside.

The bathroom on this floor has been tiled entirely in Portuguese tiles and has a shower cubicle and wash basin, as well as shelves for storage. The separate WC is also on this floor.

The house is equipped with electric heaters throughout for comfort during the cooler months.
More about Saint-Jean-de-Minervois
Your hosts Nicole and John Bojanowski, organic winegrowers at Clos du Gravillas, make the sweet village specialty "Muscat de St Jean de Minervois", but they excel at turning old-fashioned local grape varieties into elegant red and white wines. Clos du Gravillas is best known for its 100 year old Carignan vines but the estate grows 15 different grape varieties, including Terret gris and Terret Noir, Cinsault, Grenache gris/blanc/noir, Maccabeu, and even Counoise. The domaine is well-loved by the French and UK press and sells its small production around the world. Their web site is closdugravillas.com.
The village of St Jean de Minervois is famous for its sweet muscat wine, which is delicious as an aperitif or dessert wine, and goes especially well with foie gras and melon. A number wineries in the village offer tastings of muscat and other locally produced wines. Just a short walk from the house is L'Auberge de l'Ecole - the former village school now turned restaurant. One of the specialties of the restaurant is a very good version of cassoulet, and you can also buy fresh bread and croissants here every morning or from the baker who visits the village.
Walks abound in all direction and the countryside is ideal for cycling. A great walk is from St Jean de Minervois to the hamlet of Barroubio - you pass through a valley where you'll find the "Eglise du Trou" an ancient chapel. From St Jean de Minervois a short drive will take you to Bize Minervois, where the river is turned into a wonderful pool each year, perfect for a cooling dip. The shops and markets at St Chinian less than a 20 minute drive away. A great time to visit is the end of June, when the village celebrates the "Fete du Muscat".

In the fall there are a number of harvest festivals in the area, and each October the Minervois hosts "Les Grands Chemins en Minervois", a 10 day event of music, exhibitions, guided visits, theatre and art, which takes place in a variety of locations in the area.
