A fully renovated cottage in
the hamlet of Escagnes, where once silk worms were raised, provides
comfortable accommodation for up to four. Spectacular views,
all mod cons, terrace, private parking.
Enter the house through the old
front door (remember that people in old times were much smaller
than we are today!) and step into the living room, which has
wonderful views over the valley and hillsides. The room is comfortably
furnished with sofa and easy chairs and there is a television
and a Radio/cassette/CD Stereo. off the room is a walk in closet
for storage, which houses the iron and ironing board.
From the sitting room, stairs
lead up to the mezzanine above, which is the first of two bedrooms.
It is furnished with a double bed, night tables, an antique chest
of drawers and a clothes hanging rail.
A few steps lead from the sitting
room to the rest of the house. To your left is first the bathroom
with shower and wash hand basin, and then the separate WC.
The door on the right leads into the second bedroom, which sleeps
two in two single beds.
At the end of the corridor you
reach the kitchen and dining room. The fitted kitchen is well
equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, electric
cooker, double oven, microwave oven, fridge
with freezer compartment, electric coffee maker, and all
dishes, crockery and glassware. The large dining table is surrounded
by six chairs and the built in fireplace can be used to heat
the room during the cooler months.
From the kitchen a door leads
onto the terrace at the front of the house, which is equipped
with table and chairs for enjoying outdoor meals. A built
in BBQ (free wood supplied) allows you to enjoy leisurely
meals.
A private parking space
is just a few steps from the house and there is also a clothes
line. The village dates back a long time and had its heyday during
the time of the local silk production, the name Escagnes being
derived from the the cocoon of the silk worm. The mulberry tree
by the terrace is one of the very few surviving trees from that
time.
Escagnes is an ideal base for
those seeking tranquillity and relaxation. The surrounding hillsides
are perfect for exploring and for those wishing to swim the river
Orb at Vieussan or Roquebrun is not far away.

In Roquebrun you can hire canoes
or kayaks and explore the river to your hearts content. At the
top of the village is the well known Mediterranean garden, and
there are several restaurants in the village, as well as a grocery
store, baker, a post office and a cooperative winery. In Vieussan
you'll find the "Lezard Bleu" a cafe/bar famous for
its selection of Belgian beers. More extensive shopping can be
found in Saint-Chinian or Cessenon, only about 20 minutes away. |
